Antidepressants hazardous to health care coverage: Insurance plans stymie individual policyholders

When Amy M. left her steady job to become a freelance advertising copywriter, she had no idea the antidepressant she took to combat depression would have an unexpected side effect. She couldn't get health insurance.

"I was turned down by Blue Cross, Blue Shield and Kaiser," said the 35- year-old Oakland resident, who has been taking the antidepressant Celexa for several years. "My rejection letters from the insurance companies stated the reason for the denial: antidepressants."

NEW YORK - Do newer schizophrenia medicines cause diabetes?

Yes, but some more than others, according to an opinion paper sponsored by the American Diabetes Association. The opinion, backed by several other medical groups, breaks step with a controversial U.S. Food and Drug Administration decision to apply the same diabetes warning to all of these medicines--and has drawn the protests from one of the top makers of antipsychotic drugs.
